New options in graduate degrees at New Jersey campuses

Rutgers University now offers a Masters of Biomedical Science, designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences or a health-related profession.

As the summer comes to a close, it's time to start thinking about school again -- and luckily for college graduates thinking about going back to school in New Jersey, there are a lot of new and exciting graduate programs from which to choose.

At both its New Brunswick/Piscataway and Newark campuses, Rutgers University now offers a Masters of Biomedical Science, designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences or a health-related profession (especially medicine) after completing undergraduate degrees.

"The comprehensive curriculum is tailored to students who have a solid undergraduate record but require additional coursework and guidance to achieve their goals," said James Millonig, senior associate dean of Rutgers School of Graduate Studies.

A big component of the program is individualized career counseling -- a component that is clearly working, with nearly 70 percent of the graduates going on to medical school. The newest offering associated with the degree is an invite-only summer boot camp, which will take place again next summer. "It's for promising students on a waiting list to get closer consideration, guidance and the chance to be accepted into the program," Millonig said.

Monmouth University received state approval to start its second doctoral program this fall: the EdD in Educational Leadership. Shown is Harvey Allen, Ph.D., program director.

Monmouth University also is growing its graduate education, and even implemented a new Strategic Plan to do just that. Recently, the university received state approval to start its second doctoral program this fall: the EdD in Educational Leadership.

"The new EdD is a great example of how we're responding to student interest in graduate programs and market demands," said Michael A. Palladino, Ph.D., vice provost for Graduate Studies and Professor of Biology. "Area principals and superintendents identified the need for this program to help support the advanced degree interests of experienced teachers and early stage administrators."

The school worked closely with the Monmouth County Superintendents' Roundtable to develop the concept and curriculum of the new program, and several of the principals and superintendents will serve as teaching faculty for the inaugural class this fall.

The College of New Jersey is in the final stages of approval for a Master's Program in Public Health, set to start in the fall of 2018.

There also are exciting changes in the works at The College of New Jersey, which is in the final stages of approval for a Master's Program in Public Health, set to start in the fall of 2018.

"It's really a unique program that will build on our undergrad Public Health program that we launched a year ago," said Carol Kenner, dean of the School of Nursing, Health and Exercise Science.

The program will have three tracks: communication health and global health, as well as precision health, which is something you won't find at any other school.

"Many of our drug therapies of the future are dependent on understanding someone's genetic makeup," Kenner said. With more personalized information available now than ever, precision health focuses on individualizing health care. "It's about understanding that not every treatment will be exactly the same for every individual."
